Book Summary:

The Holy Spirit is a mystery to many of us today. We understand the nature and character of God the Father. We have no problem comprehending Jesus as the Son. But the Holy Spirit? We tend to hem, haw, and search for words when trying to describe him and the work he does in our lives. Perhaps some of the challenge is found in the terms. We understand God as a Father. Jesus as a Son. But God as Spirit? The word itself is mystical. In this five-session video Bible study, bestselling author Max Lucado pulls back the curtain on the third member of Trinity. He shows how Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples because they needed to be equipped for the work he had in store for them. As he said to them, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all of Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8 NKJV). Jesus knew they needed the Holy Spirit's power—to make good choices, keep promises, silence voices of fear, and get on with life. Jesus promised to provide this power to his followers. He still promises to provide this power today. The Bible reveals that the Holy Spirit—far from being an impersonal force—is always close, always active, and always at work within our lives. He is our helper, teacher, empowerer, intercessor, peace-bringer, guider, anointer, convicter, and diviner giver of gifts. God has not left us vulnerable and defenseless. Rather, his vision for us includes a Companion with resilient strength. So no more walking this path alone! No more carrying weight we were not intended to bear! It's time to enjoy the presence of the Holy Spirit and experience the life he offers. It′s time to tap into his power... and realize that help is here. When life is falling apart, God will carry you through. It has been said that everyone is either entering, in the midst of, or just exiting a trial. Popular author and pastor Max Lucado has discovered that at any given point, almost everyone is dealing with something. Whether the loss of a loved one, marriage issues, illness, job loss, or the stress of everyday life, people everywhere need the assurance that God will carry them through. Through decades of betrayal, abandonment, and false accusations, Joseph never gave up on God or His purpose. And Joseph continually trusted the sovereignty of God as Master-weaver of his life. InGod Will Carry You Through, Max invites readers to do the same—to let God’s message through Joseph guide His children through tough times today. Laced throughout Joseph’s story are personal testimonies by everyday people who discovered for themselves that “God had carried them through” as well as quotes and Scripture passages for meditation. Book Summary:

You’ll get through this. It won’t be painless. It won’t be quick. But God will use this mess for good. Don’t be foolish or naïve. But don’t despair either. With God’s help, you’ll get through this. You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten? In You'll Get Through This, pastor and New York Times best-selling author, Max Lucado offers sweet assurance. "Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras: bold, brassy, and everywhere." Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed--but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil. With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Book Summary:

Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book Summary:

God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus. Can you think of a better offer? In Just Like Jesus, pastor and bestselling author Max Lucado reminds us that being just like Jesus feels like an impossible goal until we accept one simple truth: God loves us. Jesus felt no guilt; God wants you to feel no guilt. Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to do away with yours. Jesus had no fears; God wants the same for you. Jesus had no anxiety about death; you needn't either. God's desire, his plan, his ultimate goal is to make you into the image of Christ. Not only does God love each of us exactly as we are, he wants us, little by little, to become like him. He doesn't love us and leave us alone; he loves us enough to live within us, making our hearts his home. But doing so requires a bit of sprucing up, remodeling, refurnishing. Why? Because he wants us to have a heart like his too. Just Like Jesus will teach you how far God will go to transform us into his likeness. Along the way, Max addresses questions that might arise as you examine the peaceful, passionate, and pure heart of Christ, including: How do we know that God wants us to be made in his image? How does this change occur? If God wants me to be just like Jesus, why do I still seem just like me? In Just Like Jesus, Max gives you the tools you need to better understand God's gracious gift of transformation and restoration, so you, too, can start to live Just Like Jesus.

Worship is a daunting task. For that reason, God gave us the Psalms. This collection of hymns and petitions was written over a span of centuries, in many different settings, by kings such as David and Solomon and commoners like Asaph, Heman, and the sons of Korah. Some of the psalms are defiant; others are reverent. Some are meant to be sung; others are to be prayed. Some are intensely personal; others are written as if the whole world is to use them. But all have one purpose – to help us express our hears to God. So don’t just read these psalms but actually pray them along with the saints who composed them. As you do, you will experience their energy, appreciate their honesty, and enjoy their creativity. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God’s Word. Each lesson includes an opening reflection, background information, an excerpt of the text (from the New International and New King James versions), exploration questions, inspirational thoughts from Max, and a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting and for individual study.

Book Summary:

Why is it easier to obey God than to trust Him? Because obeying God makes sense to us. In most cases, His laws appear reasonable and wise, and even when we don’t want to obey them, we usually concede that they are good for us. But the circumstances we find ourselves in often defy explanation. Before long, we begin to doubt God’s concern for us or His control over our lives. We ask, “Why is God allowing this?” or “What have I done wrong?” During such a time of adversity, Jerry Bridges began a thorough Bible study on the topic of God’s sovereignty. What he learned changed his life, and in Trusting God he shares the fruit of that study. As you explore the scope of God’s power over nations, nature, and even the details of your life, you’ll find yourself trusting Him more completely—even when life hurts. This new edition replaces both Trusting God (paperback ISBN 9781600063053) and the study guide (paperback ISBN 9781600063060) by combining both resources into one volume!

Not many know how to pray for themselves or a loved one when they are sick. Not only that, most people don’t feel confident that God is willing to help them when they pray. After John W. Nichols (author of GOD is HERE) discovered his daughter had many symptoms of autism, he began reading the Bible with new eyes, trying to understand healing for today. Soon he felt impressed to fast for 7 weeks and pray through Scriptures about healing daily. Healing is Here: A 49-Day Devotional Journey of Healing Through the Bible, compiles the author’s notes and prayers during his fast. It has been organized to apply to anyone who wants to learn about healing at their own pace, with Scriptural support, suggested prayers, and journaling prompts. (There is no requirement to fast while going through this devotional) John systematically teaches the mysteries he has unlocked over the course of four years of studying and applying Biblical Christian healing. He wrote this devotional with the hope of helping others who are in similar circumstances: those who desperately need healing, aren’t sure how to pray, and are wondering if God is willing to help. The first week covers verses that reveal: God’s healing nature Why people started getting sick Our need to connect with Him despite our pain How Jesus represented God as He healed The importance of asking God for what we need, and the promises in His Word regarding asking The depth of provision in Jesus’s sacrifice Jesus’s example of speaking to what needs changed, instead of speaking to God about what needs changed Over the course of the full 49 days you will discover: What is God and Jesus’s will regarding healing How Jesus fulfilled prophetic verses of healing How God’s will is accomplished What we can learn from the remarkable similarity between salvation and healing What do covenants have to do with sickness and healing How to receive the same blessings God promised His people in the Bible How God disciplines and teaches us What faith has to do with healing What we can learn about God by looking at Jesus in the gospels How sin and righteousness affects healing What the Bible teaches us about evil spirits How Jesus showed us to fight the enemy, and how to be equipped for that fight How Satan attacks, and what we can do about it What Jesus told His disciples (and us) to do What is the right atmosphere for healing How to exercise and apply Jesus’s name, authority, anointing, and blood How fear and doubt play into sickness and how to overcome them How to heal the soul (thoughts and emotions) What are the promises and benefits of God, and how to claim them How fasting affects healing Many surprising (and practical) elements of healing seen in the Bible which can be applied today Don’t forget to get the free resources linked within the book! "What I love about this devotional is that it answers questions about healing (mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally) in such a relatable way. Each devotional is loaded with Bible verses, a prayer and thought provoking questions to help you journal your journey to healing and restoration. This is a must read for anyone from the new believer to the person that's walked with Christ their whole life. You will gain new understanding of the Scriptures and insight into who God is and how He wants to heal you." — Chris Hendrix, Author of Devotional Guide to Stretching Your Faith, Devotions By Chris, DevotionsByChris.com "Healing is Here is a powerful resource for those pursuing physical healing in their bodies. Written with gentleness and humility, he addresses so many deep concepts in a way that quietly unravels the bad theology we've so often been taught. Jesus truly was Healer while on earth, and His Father is no different. This book is written in an accessible weekly format, so the ideas can be revisited easily as necessary. Healing is part of our portion as believers, so don't live another day sick. Pick up this book and get grounded in what the eternal Word has to say about wholeness in your body!" — Andrea Joy Moede, Writer, Coach, Speaker, Author of Misunderstood, Path of Truth, and God is Light, AndreaJoy.org "I had such a leap in my spirit that this book is going to be so anointed for the times we are in. The introduction and first devotional gave me a hunger to know more about healing." — Danielle Edens, Author of Breaking Out of the Cocoon, Founder of Second Chance Dreamers "John Nichols is an example of a young man whose life has been marvelously transformed when he surrendered to Christ. He now lives to share what he has learned with others. His Bible-based teaching will lead every follower of Jesus into a deeper, more joyful walk." — Joanne Hillman, Author of Listening Prayer, A Perfect Marriage, Song of Salome, and more, JoanneHillman.com

Book Summary:

The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Book Summary:

There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.

Book Summary:

Since the beginning of time and throughout all history, people have inspired and upheld one another by sharing their stories of faith, in times of trial and in times of joy. With that same conviction and mission we have gathered these true stories from prayerful Catholics around the world to continue this legacy. These heart-warming, hope-filled stories prove the power of prayer and clarify God’s presence and guidance in our everyday lives. This collection of stories includes those of: • Dottie, distraught over her daughter's anorexia, who renews her confidence in a devotion from her childhood. ("Sacred Heart of Jesus") • Sally, mother of four daughters and a son, who receives her son's slowly unfolding news that he has decided to become a priest. ("My Son's New Job") • Deborah, who, left penniless after a divorce, hardly dares to answer when asked by new friends at a retreat, "What do you need?" ("Miracle Soup") • Connie, whose sister's patience wears thin over prayers to St. Anthony to find a lost wallet. ("Just Pray to St. Anthony") • Martha, whose sister Jacki says God always provides for her needs, who then calls and asks, "Guess what?" ("The Christmas Bonus") • Martha, who days before her daughter's wedding, despairs of finding a location for the family party and bridal shower. ("A Picture in a Prayer") • Beth, with a Stage IV diagnosis, who returns to her doctor after a holy oil anointing. ("One Year") • Susanna, who has eight new friends with only two things in common: the military and some connection to Catholicism. ("Like Beads on a String") • Emily Sue, who wished she had listened to all the details of her dad's stories before his unexpected death, but whose melancholy vanishes as she finds a gift she had earlier been too busy to receive. ("To Susie With Love") These stories will lift your spirits and nourish your souls. Read them one at a time, alone or in a group. Savor the scripture verse or quotation. Embrace the message. Deepen your faith. Take God’s hand as He guides you on your journey of hope.
