Book Summary:

STOLEN RIVER is a story about life in rural mid-America during the late 1950's and 1960's. This is a time of optimism and prosperity in the industrial heartland, and indeed across all of America. World War II has established America as the supreme power in the world and the industrial mid-west is a beneficiary. At the same time, the seeds of the Vietnam War are being sown by the continuation of policies begun in the Eisenhower administration and embellished by John F. Kennedy. Brian Hunter is the unwitting victim of his family's, and America's, confusion about the war. As a result, he is confused about his own feelings and responsibilities. Brian is a bright, if listless, youth and teenager during this period. He is first devastated by the loss of his younger brother, Eric, for which he feels partly responsible. Then his world is shattered by poor decisions that could make him an outlaw, even as the American dream is placed in peril by the specter of Vietnam. The story, though quite different in all respects, is written with the timbre of THE YEARLING and the lyricism of A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.

Book Summary:

The City of Earthly Desire is an unforgettable novel of love and lust; beauty and vulgarity; virtue and vice; and art and ethics. Occasionally dark, but always entertaining and engaging, the narrative is peopled by a memorable cast of characters who are as intense and turbulent as the times and places they occupy. Like the great novels of the nineteenth century, the story delves into the struggle between morality and immorality; meaning and nihilism; and good and evil. After the communists destroy his dream of becoming a recognized painter in Hungary, Reinhardt Drixler escapes to America to provide a better future for his young family and to further his artistic pursuits. Twenty-five years later, communism collapses in Europe; Reinhardt’s son Béla falls in love with Suzy Kiss, an ambitious and alluring Hungarian striptease dancer whose interest in the young writer can be summarized in two words: green card. When Suzy is mysteriously deported, a devastated Béla must make a decision – should he stay in New York and continue with the noble artistic ambitions his father instilled in him, or should he follow his heart to Hungary and explore the enticing and risqué opportunities blossoming in post-communist Budapest?

He will show you how to become genuinely awake, aware of the power you have within to shift your thought processes, release attachments, and tame your ego-to name just a few topics covered in these pages. Wayne will help you understand what an illusion much of life is, so you can see the big picture and spark deep transformation (that is, "the ability to go beyond your form"), resulting in peace and harmony in all areas of your life. He will also take you through the stages of enlightenment and instruct you in mindfulness practices such as visualization and meditation, ultimately helping you reach a higher consciousness. More of New York Times best-selling author Kelley Armstrong's most popular Otherworld characters get a chance to shine in this second short fiction collection, showcasing critical moments from many different lives. Kelley Armstrong's readers have proven themselves a dedicated fan-base: her previous hardcover collection of short stories, Men of the Otherworld, appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and Canadian lists too - despite three of the stories having been available, unedited and for free, for years on Armstrong's website. With a similar format - a handful of reedited stories and one wholly original novella - Tales of the Otherworld explores the lives of some of Armstrong's most popular characters, giving readers glimpses into how Clay and Elena met, how Eve and Kristof first hooked up (a brand new novella), and how Lucas and Paige got married. Kelley is a superstar of the genre, and Tales of the Otherworld is a great way to begin 2010.

Had Bruce Quenton ever dabbled in the realm of mystical theology, he might have some idea about where he is and where he is being led in the Obscure Night. He might be able to sense the difference between life and death, and understand why he is compelled to fight so hard to be recognized as the person he had always been. The onus falls on Julie Redics to decide if Bruce is the man that he claims to be before she is obliged to prosecute him to the death chamber as a serial murderer. After all, it was Bruce who saved her from a knife-wielding rapist, and is the only man she ever loved. Most of us assume that, if we prepare, we will be safely guided through the Obscure Night. But how are we to know if it’s too late and we are already there?

Book Summary:

This is a story of neglect, abuse, loneliness, and ultimately redemption. It documents the life of Prudy Hopkins from her infancy, childhood, and teenage years in an orphanage where all her energy goes into merely surviving the best way that she can. There is no coddling or snuggling, just a handful of women taking care of her basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing. Due to a cleft palate and lip, Prudy is singled out and becomes the subject of sympathy from adults, curiosity and alienation from her peers, and abuse from misfit children who torture her because it makes them feel better about themselves. As a result, Prudy isolates herself from everyone and refuses to let anybody get close to her. After having been the subject of unspeakable violence as a teenager, she is forced to evaluate her life. Through the help of her high school English teacher and an incredible therapist, she finally learns to trust and let people penetrate the walls she has put up around herself. But after a heartbreaking, sudden, and shocking loss, she puts the fortifications back up and entrenches herself inside them. It isn’t until she meets Tom, who refuses to be daunted by her defensiveness toward him, that she is finally able to let someone in again. The rest of the story is about her life as an adult—the trials and triumphs that are unique to her. It is a beautiful and tender account of one woman’s journey through self-discovery, continued reevaluation, and the reinvention of herself.

Book Summary:

The acclaimed author of Lipstick in Afghanistan weaves together the unforgettable stories of the people she helped heal in some of the most troubled places on Earth in a gripping memoir that celebrates our shared humanity. Roberta Gately is a nurse and humanitarian aid worker who has served in war zones ranging from Africa to Afghanistan aiding refugees. Just the word refugee sparks conversation and fuel emotion. There are more than twenty-two million refugees worldwide and another sixty-five million who have been forcibly displaced. But who are these people? Images filter into our consciousness via dramatic photographs—but these photos only offer a glimpse into their stories. Footprints in the Dust aims to share the real stories of refugees around the world in hopes of revealing the truth about their experience. As a young ER nurse in Boston, Roberta was stopped cold by stark images of big-bellied babies with empty haunting stares in the news. She called the aid organization featured in the news story and within two months, she was on her way. Roberta would soon learn that world into which millions of children around the globe were born was fraught with unspeakable horrors. The only certainties for so many of these children were, and remain to this day—disease and devastating injury. Footprints in the Dust reveals the humanity behind the headlines, beginning where the newscasters end their reports. The people we meet within this riveting book are neither all saints nor all sinners—and impossible to forget.

Book Summary:

Charles Upham was the great New Zealand war hero. He was one of the few people in history to have won the Victoria Cross twice, setting new standards of personal heroism during World War II. A quietly spoken sheep farmer back home in Canterbury, at the front in Crete and North Africa he destroyed enemy machinegun posts single-handed and led a frontal assault on enemy guns. His exploits and individual heroism are the stuff of Kiwi legend. He then spent the rest of the war in prisoner-of-war camps, including the famous Colditz Castle, where he made life a misery for the German guards, constantly trying to escape. This bestselling book was first published by Hutchinson in Britain in 1962 and reprinted many times. It has become a classic. In a new Afterword written for this edition, Bruce Wallace, author of Battle of the Titans, describes Upham's life following the war until his death in 1994. Also available as an eBook

Book Summary:

James McKinley Gibson wrote this novel after retirement, but, passed away before he was able to publish his work. His daughter and her husband were inspired to bring his unique work to fruition to honor his legacy and to bring attention to this possible scenario. Twenty-Eight Days in August is a fictional novel of war over Europe. It is about the Soviet Union attacking NATO forces without the use of nuclear weapons. This war is portrayed through the viewpoint and actions of General Officers of all sides. The justification for nonnuclear tactics is laid out for the reader by the highest decision-makers of all sides, including the USA, Britain, Germany, France, Russia, and others. The readiness of NATO forces and the reliance on sophisticated weaponry to act as a force multiplier is thrust against the invading enemy. It reveals the possibility of different tactics to negate NATO forces and highlights vulnerabilities of our established theory of War in Europe.
