Never suspecting that April 22, 2016, would be anything more than a typical day, Chris's mountain bike ride turned into the most horrific day of his life. Catapulting off the sheer face of the cliff at sixteen miles an hour and falling nearly three hundred feet, this true story of grit, persistence, and love of family is nothing short of a miracle. Appearing to Chris halfway down the cliff was an angel of God dispatched to relay His message of hope and peace that God would see him through this most terrifying experience of his life. Throughout this painful journey, Chris's wife stood by his side, realizing in the end that her thinking about what she held as important in life was just as paralyzing as a fall off a mountain. Together, they healed each other as they moved closer to wholeness and the truth of God's Word. After being in a paralyzed state and moving through various hospitals and nursing facilities, Chris fought his way back to normalcy. This inspirational story is a reminder that no matter who you are or what circumstances you find yourself in, God is always true to His word and is an ever-ready presence when you are in need. Book Summary:

The book Lord's Prayer: Live It or Quit Saying It is a challenging book that attracts our interest mainly because it is full of reflections on many questions arising from the present society. This book gives us much more than mere spiritual reflections, as it gives us a meaningful experience of God the Father and invites us to reflect on the significance of our lives based on the lived spiritual experience of many ordinary individuals; it poses simple but profound challenges before us to move close to Jesus Christ. It exhorts that without a vision of heaven, our life can be a big loss. Congratulating Shri Matthew Palai for this precious endeavor, I recommend this book to all who are seriously thinking about a meaningful spiritual life. --Bishop Thomas Tharayil Auxiliary Bishop of Changanacherry In a nutshell, the Lord's Prayer is like an antibiotic. If an antibiotic does not work for you, then it will work against you. If you do not try to live what you pray, then it is better not to say the Lord's Prayer because instead of saving your soul, it will endanger it. If you do good deeds and charitable works to go to heaven, you will not get admittance to heaven, and this book tells you why. If you rely only on prayers to go to heaven, the gates of heaven will not be opened for you, and this book tells you why. The existence of God, existence and immortality of soul, life after death, hell, heaven, etc. are unverifiable, yet we should live as if they are all real, and this book tells you why. This book tells you how to become worthy to say the Lord's Prayer so that it does not endanger the soul but delivers it salvation.

Book Summary:

No Drug deal is worth dying for, was the first rule of the street that I chose to call a Street Smart rule and was one of ten informal rules which guided me through a career as a Federal Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In my book Breakfast in Kersey I detail these ten rules, the Street Smarts, that I deduced from actual street experience and incorporated them with anecdotal incidents which traced the highs and lows of my Special Agent career. In tracing my long career, the many facets of drug law enforcement are exposed; from the exciting and dangerous work of undercover to the rather mundane tasks such as long-term surveillance. Additionally, the highs and lows of a federal narcotics career are examined from the thrill of making a big seizure or arrest to the heartbreaking hardships that this job has on a family and personal life. And fi nally, I off er insights at the frustrations of the job such as inane policies and procedures established by a higher headquarters that tended to hinder investigations and, at times, agent safety to the petty bickering that existed between local, state and federal agencies over drug and or money seizures and jurisdiction. Interwoven into these facets are anecdotes, both humorous and sad but every one of them real allowing a keen insight as to what it was really like to toil in the realm of narcotics enforcement.

Book Summary:

The universe has many selfless people—people who drop everything and go out of their way to help others in need. Aruna Gobalan isn't one of them. But that changed during the year. Amidst the global pandemic of 2020, she felt a call to give back. Aruna recognized she was one of the fortunate few to have weathered the pandemic reasonably unscathed. She and her family managed to stay healthy through the crisis, and she still had a job. She found herself feeling guilty, restless, and like she could be doing more to help. So, she turned to her mediation cushion in search of inner peace. As she contemplatively fidgeted away, guilt gave way to inspiration -- she had an epiphany. She decided to embark on a 21-day secret giving project to seek out and personally thank unsung heroes in the community. Not usually one to approach strangers on the street and hand them money, Aruna took herself out of her comfort zone and into many a comical situation. She found herself tracking down postal workers, teachers, and sanitation workers to press money into their hands -- but more importantly, to make sure they knew how appreciated they were. This book is a collection of twenty short essays, one for each day of giving. Woven with Aruna's personal experiences, memories, and observations -- some funny, some lighthearted, and all real and raw. Through these essays, Aruna hopes to entertain and inspire you to undertake similar projects of your own.

In The Jackson Heights Project, author Jo Anne Meadows pours out her heart about her struggles, trauma, and unforgettable experiences of her life and the life of her late dad. Throughout this memoir, Jo Anne shares what happened to her and her family as a result of living with an alcoholic and abusive dad. Her family was torn apart due to her dads illness and by certain people who were envious of him and a negative influence in his life. Jo Anne decided to write, and she titled her book The Jackson Heights Project because this is where she lived and grew up with her mom, dad, and seven siblings during the good and bad times of their lives. She regrets the life her family had after her dad started drinking and physically abusing her mom who did not deserve this type of treatment. Jo Annes dad was a hard worker, however, and was well known as a great gospel singer in the group the Valley Spiritual Singers. Jo Anne believes her dad would have had a great future with his gospel career if he had not started drinking. One day while performing at a gig, one of the greatest gospel groups of all-time the Mighty Clouds of Joy heard him sing and asked him to come join their group. He declined and gave up on everything he worked so hard for as his life fell into a downward spiral. In The Jackson Heights Project, readers will discover how this family managed to deal with the negative effects of alcoholism and what their lives were like after their various experiences of the devastation as an innocent family. Jo Anne currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with a family of her own and is still healing from her past. Sharing her story in the pages of this book has been very therapeutic. She dedicates this book to her late dad, Mr. Joseph Joe Meadows Sr. (April 1, 1936November 4, 1983).

Book Summary:

In this concise, engaging, and provocative work, Richard Porter introduces readers to the economic tools that can be applied to problems involved in handling a diverse range of waste products from business and households. Emphasizing the impossibility of achieving a zero-risk environment, Porter focuses on the choices that apply in real world decisions about waste. Acknowledging that effective waste policy integrates knowledge from several disciplines, Porter focuses on the use of economic analysis to reveal the costs of different policies and therefore how much can be done to meet goals to protect human health and the environment. With abundant examples, he considers subjects such as landfills, incineration, and illegal disposal. He discusses the international trade in waste, the costs and benefits of recycling, and special topics such as hazardous materials, Superfund, and nuclear waste. While making clear his belief that not every form of waste presents the same amount of risk, Porter stresses the need for open-minded approaches to developing new policies. For students, policymakers, and general readers, he provides insight and accessibility to a subject that others might leave out-of-sight, out-of-mind, or buried under an impenetrable prose of statistics and jargon.

Book Summary:

A “fascinating [and] downright entertaining” look at what we throw away—and where it all goes (Booklist, starred review). Out of sight, out of mind? Into our trash cans go dead batteries, dirty diapers, bygone burritos, broken toys, tattered socks, eight-track cassettes, scratched CDs, banana peels.... But where do these things go next? In a country that consumes and then casts off more and more, what actually happens to the things we throw away? In Garbage Land, science writer Elizabeth Royte leads us on a wild adventure to answer that question. Along the way, we meet an odor chemist who explains why trash smells so bad; garbage fairies and recycling gurus; neighbors of massive waste dumps; CEOs making fortunes by encouraging waste or encouraging recycling—often both at the same time; scientists trying to revive our most polluted places; fertilizer fanatics and adventurers who kayak amid sewage; paper people, steel people, aluminum people, plastic people, and even a guy who swears by recycling human waste. With a wink and a nod and a tightly clasped nose, Royte takes us on a bizarre cultural tour through slime, stench, and heat—in other words, through the back end of our ever-more supersized lifestyles. By showing us what happens to the things we’ve “disposed of,” Royte reminds us that our decisions about consumption and waste have a very real impact—and that unless we undertake radical change, the garbage we create will always be with us: in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we consume. Garbage Land is a brilliant exploration into the soiled heart of the American trash can. “The author’s adventures in waste management provide a riveting travelog punctuated by a scathing indictment of American consumption.” —Wired “A thorough, perceptive, graceful, and often witty writer.” —Washington Monthly
