Book Summary:

Love Matters for Psychic Transformation is woven by a profound respect and love for the soul and the transformative powers of the Body Psyche. It is an exploration of the embodied psychic transformation in the specific context of the BodySoul Rhythms® work (BSR) developed by Ann Skinner, Mary Hamilton, and Marion Woodman. In describing the BSR work, interviewing six women about their experiences, and linking the BSR approach with the new neuroscience, developmental psychology, change in therapy, attachment theory, and relational trauma, Dr. Reinau brings to light all that the BSR approach has to offer. It is with relief and pleasure that I write this endorsement. Relief comes because someone with clarity, accuracy, and care has outlined the “consonants” of the work of BSR. Pleasure because the “vowels” of the work have been explored in an authentic voice from an open heart, with a keen intelligence, and from several well-studied points of view. Once again Maja Reinau has put on her diving costume, gone down, and this time surfaced with the pearl: Love Matters in Psychic Transformation. Thank you Maja. –Ann Skinner, co-creator of Body Soul Rhythms Love Matters For Psychic Transformation is a gift to the many women who have benefited from the BSR-work. Dr. Reinau is able to delve deeply into the methodology of BodySoul work without destroying the mystery. It is a treasure of information for those who seek this way of transformation in their lives. The interviews deepen the mystery as well as the understanding of the work. Dr. Reinau’s ability to link BodySoul experience to early developmental theories and to neuroscience provides the path to her conclusion that it is all about love. A conclusion with which I am sure Marion Woodman would agree. Everyone who seriously considers understanding BodySoul work should read Love Matters for Psychic Transformation. –Patricia C. Book Summary:

The following memoirs involve one woman’s attempt to expose a family curse bestowed upon them through trickery and deception. This novel is a search for answers, a struggle for truth and integrity. This is an argument for karmic justice for the author and her extended family members’ and their birthright. The following pages are one woman’s journey through hell. This is a quest to rid herself of the ghosts of her past and reveal her multibillionaire cousin’s hidden identity “It’s difficult to determine if Kingsnorth’s story is one of fiction or perceived truth, since the preface says “novel,” but the content reads like a memoir.” -Kirkus Review “ A Matter of Family: A Cousin’s Lament is a memoir of author Gloria Marie Kingsnorth’s fictional self, written in letter form to her alleged cousin, billionaire Grant Wilson Billings. The author’s writing keeps the reader enthralled. Her narrative bends and refracts the black and white of her protagonist’s life into ambiguous gray... Motifs similar to those found in the work of Edgar Allen Poe, like incest, murder, and insanity, are expertly infused in this modern Gothic.” Four Stars (out of Five) -Clarion Review

Book Summary:

A haunting story of guilt and blame in the wake of a drowning, the first novel by the author of Spectacle Susan Steinberg’s first novel, Machine, is a dazzling and innovative leap forward for a writer whose most recent book, Spectacle, gained her a rapturous following. Machine revolves around a group of teenagers—both locals and wealthy out-of-towners—during a single summer at the shore. Steinberg captures the pressures and demands of this world in a voice that effortlessly slides from collective to singular, as one girl recounts a night on which another girl drowned. Hoping to assuage her guilt and evade a similar fate, she pieces together the details of this tragedy, as well as the breakdown of her own family, and learns that no one, not even she, is blameless. A daring stylist, Steinberg contrasts semicolon-studded sentences with short lines that race down the page. This restless approach gains focus and power through a sharply drawn narrative that ferociously interrogates gender, class, privilege, and the disintegration of identity in the shadow of trauma. Machine is the kind of novel—relentless and bold—that only Susan Steinberg could have written.

Book Summary:

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Under what conditions does 'sensation' become 'sensational'? In the early nineteenth century murder was a staple of the sensationalizing popular press and gruesome descriptions were deployed to make a direct impact on the sensations of the reader. By the end of the century, public concern with the thrills, spills, and shocks of modern life was increasingly articulated in the language of sensation. Media sensationalism contributed to this process and magnified its impact, just as sensation was, in turn, taken up by literature, art and film. In the contemporary world the dramatization of these experiences in an era of media panics over terrorism and paedophilia has taken an overtly melodramatic form, in which battles of good and evil play out across the landscapes of our lives. Sensational Subjects develops an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to exploring these themes, their impact and their implications for understanding the modern world. A companion volume, Sympathetic Sentiments: Affect, Emotion and Spectacle in the Modern World is published simultaneously by Bloomsbury.

The End of Captivity?

Book Summary:

In The End of Captivity?, Tripp York addresses how we talk about the good of other animals in light of a stark impossibility: their freedom from us. While all of us in the animal (and plant) kingdom are interdependent upon one another, humans are unique in that we are the only animals who keep other animals captive. We keep animals in zoos, sanctuaries, circuses, conservatories, aquariums, research facilities, slaughterhouses, and on our farms and in our homes. York asks what such forms of captivity say about us, and how animal captivity shapes what we imagine to be the purpose of other animals. What does the fact that elephants, tigers, and horses perform in circuses say about how we see the world? What does the reality of zoological parks say about the people who create, support, decry, protest, and patronize them? How important is wildlife conservation for the good of the earth? What does "who" we put on our plate say about how we understand the theological role of other animals? These are just a few questions York tackles as he weaves through the convoluted politics surrounding the captive animals in our midst.

Book Summary:

The Nebula Award–winning author of the Alex Benedict novels and the Priscilla Hutchins novels returns to the world of Ancient Shores in a startling and majestic epic. A working stargate dating back more than ten thousand years has been discovered in North Dakota, on a Sioux reservation near Devils Lake. Travel through the gate currently leads to three equally mysterious destinations: (1) an apparently empty garden world, quickly dubbed Eden; (2) a strange maze of underground passageways; or (3) a space station with a view of a galaxy that appears to be the Milky Way. The race to explore and claim the stargate quickly escalates, and those involved divide into opposing camps who view the teleportation technology either as an unprecedented opportunity for scientific research or a disastrous threat to national—if not planetary—security. In the middle of the maelstrom stands Sioux chairman James Walker. One thing is for certain: Questions about what the stargate means for humanity’s role in the galaxy cannot be ignored. Especially since travel through the stargate isn’t necessarily only one way...

Book Summary:

"The Jungle Book" is a collection of stories and fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other four stories are probably Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Toomai of the Elephants. "The Second Jungle Book" is a sequel which features five stories about Mowgli and three unrelated stories, all but one set in India, most of which Kipling wrote while living in Vermont. "The Man Who Would Be King" is a novella about two British adventurers in British India who become kings of Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan. The story was inspired by the exploits of James Brooke, an Englishman who became the first White Rajah of Sarawak in Borneo. "Kim" is and adventure novel about the orphaned son of an Irish soldier and a poor Irish mother who have both died in poverty. Living a vagabond existence in India under British rule in the late 19th century, Kim earns his living by begging and running small errands on the streets of Lahore. "The Just So Stories" are a highly fantasized origin stories, especially for differences among animals, they are among Kipling's best known works. "The Light That Failed" "Captain Courageous" "Plain Tales from the Hills" Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature.

Book Summary:

The world of Gil's Grimoire... it calls to mind monsters, madness, magic, and mayhem, and just a bit of zaniness. A little tiny bit. Did you read "Two Zeros and The Library of Doom!" and want more from this wild world? Well, dear reader, you've come to the right place. "The Zeros and The Man Who Could Not Die" is the true beginning of Gil's Grimoire, or at least as far as our hero Dylan is concerned. Be with him for his interview and on-the-job training (now with more zombies!), a mind-bending tutorial as he learns the surprising truth about our world (a what? a multiverse did you say?), and discovers firsthand that there are many perils waiting for us in the shadows (no spoilers here, sorry!). Soon after teaming up with fellow Zeros Gil and Finch, Dylan and the gang receive their first case together: a young woman in trouble. Enter Willa Bascombe, a woman stricken with premonitions, terrible visions of a murder... her own murder, in fact. And at the hands of her darling husband, nonetheless! Rife with evil monsters, otherworld magic, undead revenants, political machinations, strange science, obligatory vampires, and plenty of camp, "The Zeros and The Man Who Could Not Die" is the first full-length novel of Gil's Grimoire.

Book Summary:

I feel that there is one big question which it is imperative that the Lord's people should face in these days, and if we can answer that question in a living way and enter livingly into the answer, very great spiritual values will be secured. The question is this -What has God revealed as His supreme objective resultant from the Cross of Christ? The question which springs out of that is - how has God revealed that the objective shall be secured and expressed? Probably it will be that subsidiary question which will occupy us largely in these meditations, leading to the answer to the main question. ...have we got the objective, that is, God's full objective, in the Cross of Christ? ... when we have them all - salvation, soul-winning, sanctification, education - does it end there? Are any, or all, of these the end? Will that satisfy God? Will that fill up His desire and expectation and be an adequate outcome of Calvary? Well, that is what we are going to look at, as the Lord enables.

Book Summary:

From Mary Shelley to H.G. Wells, a collection of the best Victorian science fiction from Michael Sims, the editor of Dracula's Guest. Long before 1984, Star Wars, or The Hunger Games, Victorian authors imagined a future where new science and technologies reshaped the world and universe they knew. The great themes of modern science fiction showed up surprisingly early: space and time travel, dystopian societies, even dangerously independent machines, all inspiring the speculative fiction of the Victorian era. In Frankenstein Dreams, Michael Sims has gathered many of the very finest stories, some by classic writers such as Jules Verne, Mary Shelley, and H.G. Wells, but many that will surprise general readers. Dark visions of the human psyche emerge in Thomas Wentworth Higginson's "The Monarch of Dreams," while Mary E. Wilkins Freeman provides a glimpse of “the fifth dimension” in her provocative tale "The Hall Bedroom.' With contributions by Edgar Allan Poe, Alice Fuller, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others, each introduced by Michael Sims, whose elegant introduction provides valuable literary and historical context, Frankenstein Dreams is a treasure trove of stories known and rediscovered.

Book Summary:

For more than 100 years, science fiction writers have told tales of alien encounters and fascinating technologies and warned of the dangers of dystopian governments. From Victorians experimenting with time travel to pioneers exploring the depths of space, the stories collected here are a tribute to the imagination of the inventors of the modern science fiction genre. Some tales are filled with boundless optimism for the ingenuity of humanity while others provide fearful warnings of the risks of war and the dangers of technology. In the late 19th century, writers across the world began looking to the future. In France, Jules Verne explored the possibilities of future technology and the wonders of exploration in his novels Journey to the Centre of the Earthand Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In England, H. G. Wells established himself as one of the founders of science fiction with his novels The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. They were both also prolific short story writers. Others followed suit. In Bengal, the feminist Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain used her fiction to advance women's rights and education. In the United States, Jack London found science fiction the perfect way to express some of his unique political ideas. By the end of World War I, science fiction had established itself as a major genre. With the birth of the pulp magazine came a slew of accomplished writers - authors such as George Griffith, John Ulrich Giesy, Homer Eon Flint, Cyril G. Wates and others excelled at the short story, able to experiment and create a sense of wonder in their fascinating tales.
