Mentors are over-utilized, under-trained and, as studies show, under-deliver. From an employer's perspective, assigning a mentor is often a band-aid to a larger problem. From an employee's perspective, a lack of formal mentorship is seen as a serious, career-inhibiting problem, the equivalent of sailing a boat without a rudder. In The Mentor Myth, Debby Carreau represents this dichotomy, explaining that while a mentor's counsel can be invaluable, it is not the silver bullet human resources professionals often purport it to be. The opinions of a mentor are one data point, one piece in the much more complex game of navigating a career. In fact, the increasing overreliance on mentorship can actually be a hindrance to a successful career. Instead of continually looking outward for career guidance, aspiring professionals must realize that they possess all the tools necessary to take control of their own careers by using their own strengths, capabilities, and visions of success. Through her years of experience consulting, speaking, and writing about career development, Debby has created a comprehensive, easy-to-implement guide for taking ownership of your professional success. Debby begins by helping the reader create a professional roadmap, including how to build a personal brand, project the right amount of confidence, and manage time. She addresses mentors in the context of networks and sponsors, advising the reader how to incorporate outward influences rather than be defined by them.

Appraising cancer as a major medical market in the 2010s, Wall Street investors placed their bets on single-technology treatment facilities costing $100-$300 million each. Critics inside medicine called the widely-publicized proton-center boom "crazy medicine and unsustainable public policy." There was no valid evidence, they claimed, that proton beams were more effective than less costly alternatives. But developers expected insurance to cover their centers’ staggeringly high costs and debts. Was speculation like this new to health care? Cancer, Radiation Therapy, and the Market shows how the radiation therapy specialty in the United States (later called radiation oncology) coevolved with its device industry throughout the twentieth-century. Academic engineers and physicians acquired financing to develop increasingly powerful radiation devices, initiated companies to manufacture the devices competitively, and designed hospital and freestanding procedure units to utilize them. In the process, they incorporated market strategies into medical organization and practice. Although palliative benefits and striking tumor reductions fueled hopes of curing cancer, scientific research all too often found serious patient harm and disappointing beneficial impact on cancer survival. This thoroughly documented and provocative inquiry concludes that public health policy needs to re-evaluate market-driven high-tech medicine and build evidence-based health care systems.

In this "funny, fresh, and utterly believable" New York Times bestseller, a young woman struggles to build a new life after the death of her husband (Publishers Weekly). 36-year-old Sophie Stanton loses her young husband to cancer. In an age where women are expected to be high-achievers, Sophie desperately wants to be a good widow -- a graceful, composed Jackie Kennedy kind of widow. Alas, Sophie is more of a Jack Daniels kind. Downing cartons of ice cream for breakfast, breaking down in the produce section of supermarkets, showing up to work in her bathrobe and bunny slippers. Soon, she's not only lost her husband, but her job and her waistline as well. In a desperate attempt to reinvent her life, Sophie moves to Ashland, Oregon. But instead of the way it's depicted in the movies, with a rugged Sam Shepherd kind of guy finding her, Sophie finds herself in the middle of Lucy-and-Ethel madcap adventures with a darkly comic edge. Still, Sophie proves that with enough humor and chutzpah, it is possible to have life after loss.

LISA FURTADO'S Fatima is a young American girl of the 1980's. She comes 'of age' in the disenfranchised era after the "Flower Power" movement, as the daughter of a proud American military leader. Her father's frequent absences, and strict, intolerant manner, drive Fatima, (and her mother) into different quests that take them from the mainstream of the American idealized family. Wanting to escape from both her parents' obsessions (and her own inner urgings), Fatima strikes out on-her-own in the wild world, hoping to connect with an older, married man who has preceded her to Asia.In her back packing travels, Fatima is exposed to adventures that challenge her perceptions and require her to look from a new light at her pre-conceived notions of relationship, independence, self reliance, submission, rebellion and self worth. She is accompanied by a ghost of the atrocities that have been wreaked on Banda's home country; and finds the contrast of devastation & rebirth, beauty & ravishment, despair & hope, intermingled in the lush greenery of Vietnam and Cambodia.Having fallen into traps of seemingly free choice; (sex, power, adoration, slavery, violence, drugs, political intrigue, and collapse), a devastated woman awakens in a hospital in Saigan, Vietnam. Here she reads Fatima's diary, and her drug riddled, recuperating mind begins to piece together the truth of who she is, and of the values of life. The devastated woman's drop into the seething abyss of life is the propellant that awakens her to the beauty of forgiveness, genuine love, values, and hope for fresh beginnings.

Inge Fernbach Rabe was born in Germany in 1924, nine years before Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Her early childhood years were marked with love, laughter, and happiness. Early in 1933, her innocent and carefree world began to crumble. It began slowly, with name-calling. At first she didn’t know the meaning of the word “Jew.” Although her grandfather had been Jewish, Inge had been raised in a Christian family. Under the German laws of the time, she was considered half-Jewish, and therefore “racially impure.” Her family bore the full brunt of Nazi economic sanctions when her Papa’s business was ruined. Soon she was experiencing the pain of rejection when many of her friends were no longer allowed to play with her and the disappointment of being deprived of educational opportunities. Inge and her family endured difficulties that had previously been unthinkable. She was sustained through tragic circumstances by her loving mother and a deep faith in God as her Heavenly Father. She rejoiced when Allied forces finally liberated the people of Germany, and looked forward to building a new life. After struggling for ten years in post-war Germany, she decided to immigrate to the United States. Her new adventure began on April 4, 1955. As an immigrant she had to master a new language, learn new customs, earn a living, and catch up on her education! Although she often found herself in difficult circumstances, the kindness of the American people kept her going. Years later, happily married and with a son and daughter, she looked back on her struggles and thanked God for seeing her through to better times. Happiness doesn’t last forever, though. Her husband passed away unexpectedly, leaving her to care for two young children. Once again she would have to rely on faith and determination to survive. And once again she would discover that God’s blessings do arrive in the midst of hardship! Inge is retired now, and fills her days with gardening and writing.

Millions of people in the United States live with serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and dementiaâ€"often for many years. Those facing serious illness have a range of interconnected medical and non-medical needs, and the way their care is financed has a large impact on the care they receive. Medicare is the predominant payer, but both Medicaid and private payers also play significant roles in financing care for serious illness. In an effort to address the complex needs of people with serious illness, public and private health care payers are testing innovative financing strategies and alternative payment models. These innovative approaches signal a gradual transition from the traditional-fee-for-service system that pays providers based on the quantity of services to a system based on the value of care provided and a heightened focus on improved quality of care at lower cost. To explore this evolving financing and payment landscape for serious illness care within public- and private-sector programs, the Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness developed a workshop, Financing and Payment Strategies to Support High-Quality Care for People with Serious Illness. The workshop convened clinicians, researchers, policy analysts, and patient advocates, as well as representatives from academia, government and private health care plans, and insurers to discuss challenges and opportunities in financing high-quality care for people with serious illness. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
