Book Summary:

This paper measures the performance of different metrics in assessing banking system vulnerabilities. It finds that metrics based on equity market valuations of bank capital are better than regulatory capital ratios, and other metrics, in spotting banks that failed (bad apples). This paper proposes that these market-based ratios could be used as a surveillance tool to assess vulnerabilities in the banking sector. While the measures may provide a somewhat fuzzy signal, it is better to have a strategy for identifying bad apples, even if sometimes the apples turn out to be fine, than not being able to spot any bad apples before the barrel has been spoiled.

Book Summary:

When we think we learned something new, we are quite proud of it. But it wears off quickly for an unknown reason. So, what is wrong with what we do? When you start to think about the things you learn, and what the reason or purpose actually is, then you have to wonder sometimes is it really something new we just learned. Because having in mind to learn something new can be quite exhausting at times. Maybe we have to start to think about this in a different way, and take a different approach in discovering new things. It is like a treasure hunt, imagine that we are all pirates looking for an adventure or treasures. Obviously our life is about searching for something, but most of the time we dont even know what we are looking for. We do this quite instinctively, maybe we are preprogrammed in a way and we are not aware of it. But when you find out who we are, then everything seams to make sense. Our entire world (Universe) stands on myth and mythology (including our history), making us wonder if it is real. Lets look at life in a different way. Learn more about our history, maybe we can learn from old things our ancestors already new, and then set that aside and try to find your own way. You most certainly will see things with different eyes. This is what our life is all about, it is a soul search where the experience we have along the way is the reward (treasure). In Australia the Aboriginal people are most likely a candidate for such an idea. They go on a regular Walkabout, which literately means looking for something. They might find something which can be worth bringing home as an idea for which the whole community can benefit from. This is what a walkabout is all about, looking for something which is useful, and has a value in the community. After all we are constantly occupied by making a living or providing for our needs. The westerners actually practice the same thing, we call them the Backpackers. People who go and see other parts of the world, enjoy the diversity and beauty of nature, as well as other cultures and traditions. Yes, we can learn something old, have a lot of fun and it can be quite rewarding. This book was taking shape, based on an ironic thought; How much knowledge there is, and we know so little. How come we know so little? We know all the most complicated things there can be, but we know very little of what life is about. What is the cause for all things? How does it all work? What is the reason? And last but not least; How do we fit into everything? Is it possible that we have taken valuable information from ancient Greek knowledge, but ignored one of their most important practices the philosophy of all things. Has everything to us become scientific or important because sciences can explain the real world. Have we forgotten that this real world we live in comes from a mystical source (something unseen). Something we call a different dimension because we cant possibly explain it. It is such an exotic source, that it would take a lot of ancient knowledge to discover the truth. Do you want to discover the truth? This book might have some answers.

Book Summary:

With a focus squarely on the Midwest, Wendy Bilen pieces together the history of her grandmother, Josie Broadhead, born in 1911 and raised on the North Dakota prairie. Josie married a Wisconsin farmer and moved to a large dairy farm outside La Crosse; along the way she began taking in people in need of a home: ". . . beggars and drunks and children of drunks, mentally ill children and children with mentally ill parents. Brothers and cousins and sisters and in-laws and strangers." By taking on these challenges that no one else wanted, Josie left an almost mythical legacy. Years after Josie's death, Bilen embarks on a journey to unearth Josie's story and quickly realizes that the search is about her, too. As she discovers her grandmother's complicated nature ("a woman proud and humble, loving and unaffectionate, strict and visionary, joyful and troubled, a woman held together by contradictions like an arch and its capstone"), she learns much about herself and her own choices. And as she breathes life into Josie and her family, friends, and neighbors, the author evokes a powerful sense of place of small towns and farms, of prairie, of Josie's home, all of which feel both fresh and satisfyingly familiar. Much more than mere memoir or family history, this dual story about Bilen's journey illuminates the surprising ways our lives intersect with our ancestors'. An extraordinary story about a seemingly ordinary woman, Finding Josie will inspire readers to explore their own family history in their own way.

Book Summary:

The Redwood Pack has protected their own for centuries, but when a rival Pack of shifters summons a demon to alter the climate of the entire battle and their fates, the Redwoods will have to come together or make the greatest sacrifice of all. An Alpha’s Path – A Redwood Pack Prequel Melanie wasn’t prepared to fall for her blind date, but when the gorgeous, green-eyed man claims she’s his mate and says that he’s a wolf shifter, she thinks she’s gone off the deep end. She’s analytical by nature, but it might just be something more intangible—the paranormal—that changes her life. Kade is the Heir of the Redwood Pack and eldest son of the Alpha. When he sees Melanie for the first time, he knows she’s it for him. However, not only does he have to convince her that she’s his, he also has to deal with an unwelcome rival that no one was prepared for. A Taste for a Mate – Redwood Pack Book 1 When Beta of the Redwood Pack, Jasper, finally takes a step forward to claim the one woman who could be his, he isn’t prepared for the Centrals to take notice. Now he must fight to protect her, as well as show her that wolves can be gentle in a world of teeth and claws. Jasper and Willow are drawn together despite everything that works against them, but it’s Willow who must show the world who she really is and save them both. Trinity Bound – Redwood Pack Book 2 Reed is the only son of the Alpha without purpose, but when he sacrifices himself to save his brother’s mate, he’ll find more than he bargained for. Hannah is an earth witch and knows how to protect herself from danger, but she might not know how to do the same for her heart when she meets two men who could be hers. Josh knew the things that went bump in the night were real, but he wasn’t prepared for the way a wolf and a witch could lay claim to his heart, as well as his soul. The Centrals are ready to take the next step in their war against the Redwoods, and it will take the three of them—together—to not only save their people but also trust themselves. ~~~~~~~~ Read what others are saying about New York Times bestselling author, Carrie Ann Ryan: “Count on Carrie Ann Ryan for emotional, sexy, character driven stories that capture your heart!” – Carly Phillips, NY Times bestselling author “Carrie Ann Ryan’s romances are my newest addiction! Book Summary:

Paleobiologist Anthony D. Barnosky weaves together evidence from the deep past and the present to alert us to the looming Sixth Mass Extinction and to offer a practical, hopeful plan for avoiding it. Writing from the front lines of extinction research, Barnosky tells the overarching story of geologic and evolutionary history and how it informs the way humans inhabit, exploit, and impact Earth today. He presents compelling evidence that unless we rethink how we generate the power we use to run our global ecosystem, where we get our food, and how we make our money, we will trigger what would be the sixth great extinction on Earth, with dire consequences. Optimistic that we can change this ominous forecast if we act now, Barnosky provides clear-cut strategies to guide the planet away from global catastrophe. In many instances the necessary technology and know-how already exist and are being applied to crucial issues around human-caused climate change, feeding the world’s growing population, and exploiting natural resources. Deeply informed yet accessibly written, Dodging Extinction is nothing short of a guidebook for saving the planet.

Book Summary:

Traditionally, scientific fields have defined boundaries, and scientists work on research problems within those boundaries. However, from time to time those boundaries get shifted or blurred to evolve new fields. For instance, the original goal of computer vision was to understand a single image of a scene, by identifying objects, their structure, and spatial arrangements. This has been referred to as image understanding. Recently, computer vision has gradually been making the transition away from understanding single images to analyz ing image sequences, or video understanding. Video understanding deals with understanding of video sequences, e. g. , recognition of gestures, activities, fa cial expressions, etc. The main shift in the classic paradigm has been from the recognition of static objects in the scene to motion-based recognition of actions and events. Video understanding has overlapping research problems with other fields, therefore blurring the fixed boundaries. Computer graphics, image processing, and video databases have obvious overlap with computer vision. The main goal of computer graphics is to gener ate and animate realistic looking images, and videos. Researchers in computer graphics are increasingly employing techniques from computer vision to gener ate the synthetic imagery. A good example of this is image-based rendering and modeling techniques, in which geometry, appearance, and lighting is de rived from real images using computer vision techniques. Here the shift is from synthesis to analysis followed by synthesis.

Robot sensors and transducers

Book Summary:

The use of sensor's with machines, whether to control them continuously or to inspect and verify their operation, can be highly cost-effective in particular areas of industrial automation. Examples of such areas include sensing systems to monitor tool condition, force and torque sensing for robot assembly systems, vision-based automatic inspection, and tracking sensor's for robot arc welding and seam sealing. Many think these will be the basis of an important future industry. So far, design of sensor systems to meet these needs has been (in the interest of cheapness) rather ad hoc and carefully tailored to the application both as to the transducer hardware and the associated processing software. There are now, however, encouraging signs of commonality emerging between different sensor application areas. For instance, many commercial vision systems and some tactile systems just emerging from research are able to use more or less standardized techniques for two-dimensional image processing and shape representation. Structured-light triangulation systems can be applied with relatively minor hardware and software variations to measure three-dimensional profiles of objects as diverse as individual soldered joints, body pressings, and weldments. Sensors make it possible for machines to recover 'sensibly' from errors, and standard software proce dures such as expert systems can now be applied to facilitate this.

Book Summary:

One Friday morning in the spring of 1972, an ad in the Vancouver Sun caught Nick Marach’s eye: GILLNETTER FOR SALE. A young architect who had just returned to the west coast from a yearlong motorcycle trip abroad, Marach was not looking for a change of career—but he was looking for a boat to live on, and the price of the old gillnetter was cheap. A Gillnet’s Drift takes the reader back to a time when the salmon runs on the BC coast were strong, and all it took to call oneself a commercial fisher was a boat, a net, and a licence. No experience was required. It was during this era that Nick Marach found himself, quite unexpectedly, with a new vocation and a new lease on life. For the next decade, he spent every salmon season navigating the waters off BC, following his bliss, and many times narrowly escaping with his life. Along the way he befriended a slew of colourful characters, met the love of his life, and somehow in the midst of it all still found the time to be an architect. This book captures the allure of the gillnetter’s life in a bygone era, but it is also about the freedom of youth, the desire for self-expression, and the refusal to ever settle down completely, even when you have an office and a family waiting for you on dry land.
