Book Summary:

First patented in 1856, baking powder sparked a classic American struggle for business supremacy. For nearly a century, brands battled to win loyal consumers for the new leavening miracle, transforming American commerce and advertising even as they touched off a chemical revolution in the world's kitchens. Linda Civitello chronicles the titanic struggle that reshaped America's diet and rewrote its recipes. Presidents and robber barons, bare-knuckle litigation and bold-faced bribery, competing formulas and ruthless pricing--Civitello shows how hundreds of companies sought market control, focusing on the big four of Rumford, Calumet, Clabber Girl, and the once-popular brand Royal. She also tells the war's untold stories, from Royal's claims that its competitors sold poison, to the Ku Klux Klan's campaign against Clabber Girl and its German Catholic owners. Exhaustively researched and rich with detail, Baking Powder Wars is the forgotten story of how a dawning industry raised Cain--and cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes, donuts, and biscuits.

It is an exceptional document, hugely rare and of great significance not only to textile historians but dyers and colourists today, as thanks to the information in the manuscript the colours can be reproduced exactly, with the same ingredients, or reproduced using modern techniques by matching the colour samples. To the English translation of the text, together with facsimile pages reproduced in colour from the original manuscript, are added essays meant to situate it in its historical, economic and technological contexts. For those historians who have long been fascinated by the change in scale and the amount of innovation that occurred in woollen cloth production in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, the Memoirs on Dyeing bring first-hand insight into the daily preoccupations and tasks of a key actor in the success story of the Languedocian broadcloth production specially devised for export to the Levant. Even non-specialists may be interested in understanding the clever management and technical organisation that made it possible for the author to produce, dye, finish, pack and export up to 1,375 pieces of superfine broadcloth per year, representing nearly 51 km of cloth.

Book Summary:

This first cookbook published in Indiana was originally titled in its first edition Mrs. Collins’ Table Receipts: Adapted to Western Housewifery. It became so popular that in 1857 it was republished in New York City under the name The Great Western Cook Book. Collins noted in her preface that the book was intended for “Ladies of the West,” and thus there are recipes such as Sausage-Hoosier Fashion and Veal-Western Fashion included for pioneer women in the “West” of its time. Noting that “Our generous and prolific clime affords a bountiful supply of nutritious fruits and vegetables, and our forests and hill sides abound in excellent Game,” Collins included many recipes that used local produce and ingredients. The first recipe in the book for California Soup provides a method for homemade bouillon cubes, named for travelers heading further west during the gold rush years. This edition of The Great Western Cook Book by Angelina Maria Collins was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.

Book Summary:

Kindly please read this and then send this message to your relatives, friends, and business associates in South Africa and overseas. "Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush" by David Robert Dalton (with contributions by Mike, Trevor & Garth Dalton) Embark on Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush with author David Robert Dalton, who takes you to the African bush in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Inspired by his and his brothers’ fond memories of growing up in the little copper mining town of Messina (now called Musina) in South Africa, with written contributions from his three elder brothers, he pens a wacky, side-splitting tale of his adventures growing up in the little bushveld town. Set in the African bushveld (a.k.a. “the Great Arizona Desert”), the three elder Dalton cowpokes are members of a gang dubbed the Messina “Dalton Gang”, after the infamous Wild West Dalton Gang, who roar around on their two-wheeler steeds and talk in tough Western jargon. The youngest Dalton cowpoke, six-year-old, David, calls himself “Gunslinger” and his main ambition in life is to become a recognized member of the gang. Together with his little African “Pawnee” sidekick-hombre, Tokoloshie-Two-Feathers, and his three-legged Jack Russell dog, Jock, Gunslinger tries hard to impress, but continually messes up. The story, told in a light-hearted tongue-in-cheek fashion, as told through the fertile imagination of a six-year-old boy, but is written for adults. There’s a delightful array of wacky small-town characters that help the story come alive, making you feel part of it. There’s the delicious Danish Tart, who runs the Mine Rec Club bar, Speedy, the town’s beefy Harley-riding policeman, Paparazzo, the long-nosed Italian crime reporter, Frank&Earnest (the same person!), the hip Holy father, the disapproving Dominee, Mrs Bogey, the Mine Manager’s snooty wife, and the gang’s all-suffering parents, the Old Man and Daisy-Anne, who all contribute to the hilarity! Dredging up one’s own childhood memories, it’s a wonderful nostalgic tale to touch the hearts of all ages! “It’s so darned funny; it’ll have you laughing out loud! A charming and endearing must-read story for all ages! I simple loved it!” – Brenda George, author of Falling Leaves and Mountain Ashes. “I warmed to this delightful and endearing book – a unique African TO-KILL-A-MOCKINGBIRD look into the mind of a child of those nostalgic times.” – Gloria Keverne, international bestselling author of A Man Cannot Cry and Broken Wings. Book Summary:

"The History of Chemistry" spans a period from very old times to the modern era. Since several millennia BC, civilizations were using technologies that would eventually form the basis of the various branches of chemistry. Chemistry was preceded by its protoscience, alchemy, which is an intuitive but non-scientific approach to understanding the constituents of matter and their interactions. It was unsuccessful in explaining the nature of matter and its transformations, but, by performing experiments and recording the results, alchemists set the stage for modern chemistry. While both alchemy and chemistry are concerned with matter and its transformations, the crucial difference was given by the scientific method that chemists employed in their work. Chemistry is considered to have become an established science with the work of Antoine Lavoisier, who developed a law of conservation of mass that demanded careful measurement and quantitative observations of chemical phenomena. The object of this work is to present a comprehensive overview of the progress of chemistry, from its first rude and modest beginnings till it has reached its modern state of importance as one of the leading sciences._x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ Of Alchymy_x000D_ Of the Chemical Knowledge Possessed by the Ancients_x000D_ Chemistry of the Arabians_x000D_ Of the Progress of Chemistry under Paracelsus and His Disciples_x000D_ Of Van Helmont and the Iatro-Chemists_x000D_ Of Agricola and Metallurgy_x000D_ Of Glauber, Lemery, and Some Other Chemists of the End of the Seventeenth Century_x000D_ Of the Attempts to Establish a Theory in Chemistry_x000D_ Of the Foundation and Progress of Scientific Chemistry in Great Britain_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ Of the Foundation and Progress of Scientific Chemistry in Great Britain_x000D_ Of the Progress of Philosophical Chemistry in Sweden_x000D_ Progress of Scientific Chemistry in France_x000D_ Progress of Analytical Chemistry_x000D_ Of Electro-Chemistry_x000D_ Of the Atomic Theory_x000D_ Of the Present State of Chemistry
